Epigenetics, as a simplified definition, is the study of biological mechanisms that will switch genes on and off. What does that mean? Well, if you are new to this whole thing, we first need a quick crash course in biochemistry and genetics before learning exactly what is epigenetics:
- Cells are fundamental working units of every human being. All the instructions required to direct their activities are contained within the chemical deoxyribonucleic acid, also known as DNA.
- DNA from humans is made up of approximately 3 billion nucleotide bases. There are four fundamental types of bases that comprise DNA – adenine, cytosine, guanine, and thymine, commonly abbreviated as A, C, G, and T, respectively.
- The sequence, or the order, of the bases is what determines our life instructions. Interestingly enough, our DNA sequence is mostly similar to that of a chimpanzee. Only a fraction of distinctively different sequences makes us human.
- Within the 3 billion bases, there are about 20,000 genes. Genes are specific sequences of bases that provide instructions on how to make important proteins – complex molecules that trigger various biological actions to carry out life functions.

This article explains the effects of experience and how life can alter genes for better or worse. Schools need to be aware of this concept and gain an understanding of the parents background and maybe even the grandparents. Trained social workers should perform extensive interviews to help reveal information that could be contributing to a students disrespectful, irresponsible, and non-complaint behaviors.

A scene that often replays in my mind is being 13 years old, curled up in the fetal position on the floor and being kicked in the ribs. I’m screaming but then my voice catches and becomes a silence that sticks as a lump in the throat that stays there for years.
Bullying – which can be physical, mental, emotional, verbal – can steal a lot, including our confidence and self-esteem. It can also steal language, the ability to express what we have experienced.

We all have experienced childhood bullying. The impact of it can last a lifetime. I believe that when it is not dealt with in childhood it creates problems in adulthood. Bullying Is Behavior That No One Forgets. In this age where bullying, harassment and intimidation is so prevalent I believe it’s time for character and morals to make a comeback. We need to develop the confidence and the language to thwart bullying and learn how to remain safe both physically and emotionally.

Complex trauma survivors face a dilemma that very few can fathom: they are forced to confront present-day stressors while attempting to resolve triggers from the past. These layers upon layers of trauma take courage, support and time to unravel. The healing journey of a complex trauma survivor who has several sources of toxic stress is multifaceted. Their day to day reality is filled with tiny terrors embedded within larger cracks in the psychological war zone that is their psyche.
Survivors of bullying and other traumas face a double bind: not only are they oppressed by their peers, they are often oppressed by family members, authority figures and other life circumstances. When bullying is also supplemented with other microaggressions or tumultuous life events, the trauma is undeniably more forceful in its impact.
What happens when the child is bullied at both school and the home, both meant to be safe places? What sort of effects linger far beyond childhood, when not only peers but also parental figures simultaneously terrorize the victim? Or what about the impact of chronic, severe bullying – a form of bullying which occurs for years across the child’s entire school career, rather than short-term?

This type of behavior is a direct result of communities and schools failure to build a safe and secure environment for all. Too often small compromises have been made resulting in a progression of behavior that results in events like the one mentioned or in more serious and tragic events that could end up with a school shooting or a suicide. Work needs to be done by all in building safer and more secure communities and schools.
